Abstract
The vegetative growth of cultivated grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) is generally excessive.
Excessive vegetative growth results in dense canopies with little solar radiation reaching the interior leaves and fruits which results in decreased fruit quantity and quality.
Paclobutrazol (PBZ) is a member of the plant growth regulators that is responsible for decreasing vegetative growth and increasing yield.
An experiment was, therefore, conducted to find out whether PBZ foliar application at various concentrations (0, 100, 200, and 300 mg L-1) at the time of anthesis would improve yield and inhibit extension vegetative growth of Keshmeshi Bovanat grapevines.
The results indicated that all concentrations of PBZ increased the number of berries per cluster, cluster weight and yield per vine.
The use of PBZ also increased relative leaf chlorophyll content compared with the control.
Application of PBZ decreased mean shoot length and pruning weight.
Total soluble solid and acidity of fruit were not affected by PBZ. It was concluded that PBZ appears to be a promising means of controlling the balance between vegetative and generative development.
