Abstract
Most plant viruses are transmitted by natural vectors, mainly insects.
Furthermore, some viruses are able to infect plants through sexual reproduction by pollen or by seeds infecting the next generation.
ACLSV (Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus) is one of the most important viruses that affect apricot cultivars in Murcia (Spain). Most cultivars are susceptible and the virus produces important symptoms in fruits, which become unmarketable. ‘Búlida’, the main apricot cultivar of Murcia, is very susceptible to ACLSV and most orchards are infected with this virus.
There is not experimental information about the transmission of ACLSV in apricot, although the high level of infection of some cultivars suggests that ACLSV is, at least, transmitted by vegetative propagation.
However, there is no information about the transmission of this virus by sexual reproduction.
Seeds from more than 2000 ‘Búlida’ fruits infected with ACLSV were stratified, germinated and the seedlings obtained analysed for presence of ACLSV by RT-PCR. None of the 442 plants studied were infected with ACLSV, showing that this virus is not able to be transmitted by seeds to the seedlings.
