Abstract
In France, apricot trees are mainly grown on peach seedling rootstocks and apricot seedling rootstock (Manicot) in the light soils, and rather on the plum hybrid rootstock Torinel®Avifel, or myrobalan rootstocks in heavy clay soils.
INRA released in 1986 Ishtara®Ferciana, a diploid plum×peach hybrid and in 1989 Torinel®Avifel, a Prunus domestica hybrid.
Now, the objectives of the apricot rootstock breeding program of the INRA Avignon are to develop new rootstocks more vigorous than Torinel®Avifel in heavy soils, resistant to nematodes and more tolerant to bacterial canker.
This year, two new clonal rootstocks, Myrotop® (Prunus cerasifera) and Toriplus® (Prunus domestica) are proposed to be released.
The results of the behaviour of these rootstocks in two apricot rootstocks trials, planted in CTIFL and INRA orchards, are presented.
In the CTIFL trial planted in 2007, the rootstocks show a different behaviour between the two grafted apricot cultivars Bergarouge® and Flavorcot®. The peach seedling Montclar® and the myrobalan Myrotop® have the best cumulated yield.
It needs some additional years to have clear evaluation of Toriplus®. In the INRA orchard planted in 2000, Myrotop® showed also a good behaviour and a weak percent mortality.
In the two sites Ishtara® confirms its good productivity index, with a good productivity and a weak trunk section area.
The CTIFL orchard will be observed during five next years to support these first results.
