Abstract
Ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) (1%), 6-benzyladenine (BA) (100 ppm) and metamitron (100, 175, and 350 ppm) were evaluated as thinning agents on 3 years old ‘Fuji’/M9 apples trees.
The formulates were applied in a single and double application or as a combination.
No differences between treatments as far as yield, fruit weight and number of fruits (70-85 mm) were detected although the fruit commercial size classes were affected.
The fruit set was reduced by all the treatments, and Metamitron at 350 ppm caused over-thinning in trees with low crop load.
Weather conditions affect ATS+BA efficacy.
Hand thinning (performed at one fruit/cluster spaced 15 cm apart one from each other) is effective but an alternative must be found because the manual operation is very costly.
