Abstract
Fruitlet ethylene evolution and expression of ethylene related MdACO1, MdACS5A, and MdACS5B genes were monitored in the abscission zone (AZ) and fruit cortex (FC) of king and lateral ‘Golden Delicious’/M9 fruitlets.
Four treatments were established: application of 15 mg•L-1 naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 150 mg•L-1 6-benzyladenine (BA), 500 mg•L-1 ethephon, and 3-days with 96% shading.
All treatments were performed when the fruitlets reached 10 mm diameter, respectively.
Application of NAA, BA and ethephon effectively reduced fruit set reflected in a reduced final number of fruit per tree and a greater weight of fruit at harvest.
However 3-days 96% shading treatment did not exhibit any influence on fruit set compared to control trees.
Lateral fruitlets (LF) were more susceptible to abscission after chemical treatments compared to king fruitlets (KF). Only the ethephon treatment significantly altered the expression of MdACO1 and caused higher ethylene evolution in KF, while in LF also NAA and BA treatments had an impact on higher ethylene evolution, MdACO1 expression and fruitlet abscission.
Expression of MdACO1 gene was a good indicator of abscission, while MdACS5A and MdACS5B genes were expressed at a lower level with non-significant differences between treatments.
