CHILLING AND HEAT REQUIREMENTS FOR FLOWERING OF THE MAIN PISTACHIO TUNISIAN CULTIVAR ‘MATEUR’

Abstract
Nut trees must fulfill a chilling requirement to break their dormancy.
In Tunisia, pistachio is wide spread in the center and south of the country and Mateur is the most cultivated pistachio cultivar.
However, little information is available for its chilling and heat requirements for breaking dormancy and flowering.
The present research was carried out under laboratory conditions in order to determine chilling and heat requirements for pistachio cultivar Mateur.
For that purpose, Mateur pistachio shoots were placed in a cold room for different periods to estimate its chilling requirement.
After that the heat accumulation were computed until the bud flowering.
Chilling and heat requirements of Mateur for flowering were estimated to be 600 CU and 12000 GDH, respectively.
High chilling accumulation increased the percentage of flowering, whereas inadequate chilling accumulation increased the heat requirement for a good bud break.
To validate laboratory results a phenological datasets of five-year monitoring period under field conditions was used.
