Abstract
This work aims to assess the reproductive traits of nineteen, 40-year-old, trees of male pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) genotypes.
The successive stages of flower cluster development were described.
Structural composition of the inflorescence was studied for a total number of 30 clusters originating from ten genotypes (3 clusters per genotype) to determine the most variable trait affecting reproductive capacity.
The percent of reproductive buds on annual shoots was calculated.
Acetic-carmin staining method was used to check pollen viability.
In vitro pollen germination was also determined on Afshari et al. (2008) solidified agar medium.
As a result, nine phenological stages were described.
The flower cluster characterization revealed high intra-specific variability of the number of secondary and tertiary ramifications.
These parameters may be used in reproductive trait assessment to distinguish between male pistachio genotypes.
The total average number of flowers per cluster varied between 240 and 560 flowers.
The percent of reproductive buds on annual shoots varied from 8% (H23a genotype) to 73.9% (H26a genotype). Fresh pollen viability of 17 P. vera genotypes was high and varied from 91.6 to 98.7%. Pollen germination rates were higher on light than on dark conditions and showed great variations (0.8-88.2%).
