Abstract
The recommended insecticide application timing for control of the navel orangeworm, Ameylois transitella Zeller, is at hull split or post-hull split to control the larvae of the eggs laid by females from the second and third flights.
Insecticides applied to control larvae produced by females of the first flight has not been recommended because most conventional insecticides were also disruptive of biological control of pest Arthropods.
Recently, a number of insect growth regulators, diamide insecticides, and spinosyns have been registered that are presumed to be less disruptive of natural enemies.
These products could be applied as “May sprays” targeting the larvae emerged from eggs laid by first flight females on almond “mummies”. Field studies during the spring flights of 2009 through 2012, revealed that the insect growth regulator methoxyfenozide, the diamide insecticides chlornitraniliprone and flubendiamide, the spinosyn insecticide spinetoram and the avermectin emamection benzoate all prevented further mummy infestation by A. transitella as effectively as did conventional organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides.
Success of treatment timing at the recommended 56 DD (°C) after A. transitella biofix did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from treatments applied at the initiation of egg-laying or the recommended 222 DD (°C) following biofix treatment timing for the peach twig borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller.
