Abstract
Controlled hybridization of Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) using six cultivars as parents produced 1728 fruits, of which only 15.5% had seeds.
The rate of fruit with seed was significantly different between cross combinations or years.
A total of 47 immature embryos including 30 from ‘Zizao’ × ‘Lajiaozao’, 15 from ‘Dongzao’ × ‘Wuhezao’ and 2 from ‘Wuhezao’ × ‘Dongzao’ germinated directly in embryo culture and their clones were established by microporopagation.
The micropropagated progenies were transplanted into field in 2008 and then delayed flowering in the progenies was exhibited.
Only 28.8% of progenies began to blossom in 2011, the fourth year of transplanting and 46.7% still failed to flower in 2012, the second year of grafting. 13 progeny including 9 of 18 blooming progeny from ‘Zizao’ × ‘Lajiaozao’ and 4 of 6 blooming progeny from ‘Dongzao’ × ‘Wuhezao’ beared fruits in 2012. 11 male-specific randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers including 6 markers from 4 primers in ‘Zizao’ × ‘Lajiaozao’ and 5 markers from 4 primers in ‘Dongzao’ × ‘Wuhezao’ were used to verify hybrids.
All fruiting progenies were identified to be authentic hybrids.
