Abstract
Survey and surveillance were carried out since 2004 to study the biological control agents of insect-pests of Indian jujube (ber) in the Punjab (North-Western India). Roving surveys were conducted in the three agro-climatic zones of the state i.e., South Western arid zone, central plain zone and sub-montaneous zone along with fixed plot surveys in the New Orchard of Punjab Agricultural University (P.A.U.), Ludhiana.
This study reports 28 biocontrol agents predating/parasitizing insect pests of Indian jujube from the orders Coleoptera (7), Hymenoptera (5), Dictyoptera (3), Diptera (3), Odonata (2) and Aranae (8). Grubs/adults of Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, Brumoides suturalis (Fabricius), Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius), Anegleis cardoni (Weise), Rodolia fumida (Mulsant), Scymnus pyrocheilus Mulsant, Scymnus nubilus Mulsant and number of colour morphs of C. septempunctata and C. sexmaculata were observed.
Among hymenopteran wasps, cocoons of Dinocampus (=Perilitus) coccinellae (Schrank), a solitary endo-parasitoid of C. septempunctata and C. sexmaculata were observed on the ventral side of the adult beetles on the leaves. Apanteles flavipes (Cameron), Bracon sp., Parapanteles sp., Biosteres (=Chilotrichia) longicaudatus Ashmead and yellow wasp, Polistes hebraeus (Fabricius) were observed.
Among dictyopteran predators, praying mantis viz. Creobroter gemmatus Stoll, C. pictipennis Wood Mason and Heirodula sp. were observed. dipteran predators included maggots of syrphid flies viz. Episyrphus viridaureus (Wiedeman), Episyrphus balteatus (DeGeer) and Paragus serratus Fabricius.
In the order Odonata, dragonflies viz. Pantala flavescens (Fabricius) and Palpopleura sexmaculata were observed.
Among spiders (order Arenae), Neoscona bengalensis Tikader & Bal, N. theisi (Walckenaer), N. punctigera (Doleschall), Neoscona sp., Oxyopes ashae Gajbe, Argiope sp., Olios sp. and Telamonia dimidiata (Simon) were active.
