Abstract
One of the functions of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) is to advise member governments on the technical, administrative and legislative measures necessary to prevent or retard the introduction and spread of dangerous pests.
The article reviews how this is done in the field of quarantine and why there is a need to formulate lists of pests not yet introduced into the EPPO area and those which are present in one or more EPPO countries.
Remaining difficulties are discussed and fireblight is then considered in the light of the adopted strategy.
