Abstract
Gedong gincu is one of the commercial mangoes in Indonesia which has a high economic value.
Yet, up till now, its productivity and fruit quality is still low.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of watering based on field capacity (FC) and K fertilization on the production of mango, especially for the Gedong gincu cultivar.
The research was conducted at the farmer orchard in Cirebon, West Java Indonesia, from January 2011 to December 2012. The experiment was arranged in a factorial randomized block design with two factors and four replications.
First factor was watering: (0, 0.5, and 1 FC). Watering was applied mainly during dry season, in the flowering and fruiting development phase.
The second factor was K fertilizer with doses of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 g KCl tree‑1 year‑1. K fertilization was done for three times: at post-harvest, one month before flowering and one month since fruiting.
The results showed that watering based on FC and K fertilizer application could enhance mango production and fruit size.
The highest total production was shown with a combination treatment of 1 FC and 500 g KCl tree‑1 year‑1, i.e., 59.78 kg tree‑1. Meanwhile the lowest total production was obtained with a combination treatment of 0 FC and 250 g KCl tree‑1 year‑1, i.e., 19.13 kg tree‑1. The highest fruit number percentage within size (200-250 g) and over 300 g were obtained with a combination of watering at 1 FC and fertilization of 500 g KCl tree‑1 year‑1, i.e., 45.44 and 14.16%, respectively.
While the lowest was obtained with the treatment 0 FC and 250 g KCl tree‑1 year‑1, i.e., 26.31 and 1.31%, respectively.
This study can be a recommendation for watering and fertilization on mango, especially for the Gedong gincu cultivar.
