Abstract
Pomegranate has two distinct placenta tissues that are axial and parietal in lower and upper parts, respectively.
The PLAC8 gene family has important roles in placenta cell division, which controls fruit development.
All putative PLAC8 candidate genes from pomegranate (Punica granatum) transcriptome as well as genomes of five species including grape (Vitis vinefera), orange (Citrus sinensis), papaya (Carica papaya), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and peach (Prunus persica) were analyzed.
The objective was to understand the evolutionary trait of the PLAC8 family in plants; a maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree was reconstructed.
Phylogeny inference showed that 11 PLAC8 Groups with a total of 83 paralogous genes were investigated.
Interestingly, the fruit weight (FW) gene was clustered into Group2; this putative subfamily may play vital roles in fruit development.
The FW protein is located in plasma membrane.
Pomegranate putative FW is an unstable hydrophilic protein synthesized by free ribosomes, directly worked in the membrane surface, and it might be affected by genotype and the outside stimulation sensitivity.
Paralogous pairs with a Ka/Ks ratio <1 in pomegranate FW genes means the mutations restriction with the purifying selection.
Our research can provide a reference for enhancing the production of pomegranate.
