Abstract
Eight cultivars have been micropropagated.
The critical stage of micropropagation was rooting : keeping tubes in darkness for a maximum time of 21 days on a medium with NAA 0.5 mg/l and kinetin 0.05 mg/l, has given about 70% in vitro rooting in 40 days.

285 micropropagated plants were observed until harvest.
They were true to their varietal types.
Micropropagated plants showed a rapid growth in the fields and a slightly larger size.
The increase of the yield reached 30% in the second year of production (mean for 5 varieties). This increase was sometimes partly due to an increase of productive stalks per plant.
In all the cultivars, Artichoke Latent (Poty) Virus (ALV) was identified.
In some of them, an icosahedric virus, not yet identified, was found.
Rarely, Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) was observed.
Virus-free clones were obtained.
The preliminary observations have showed that their advantage is more or less pronounced depending on the initial health status of the cultivars.
