Abstract
Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) requires careful selection of growth habits of the cultivated plants.
In the current study lines of pea were grown in a nutrient film technique (NFT) hydroponics system with light emitting diode (LED) lighting and enhanced dissolved oxygen levels (DO) to investigate effects on shoot architecture.
LED lighting (Philips GreenPower Deep red and Blue LED Research Modules), enhanced DO (O2Grow Oxygen Emitter Diffuser), LED lighting plus DO, and control hydroponic environments were established in a greenhouse setting.
Plant height, node of flower initiation, axillary bud development, flower number and pod set were recorded throughout development of the crown pea and the garden pea ‘Petite Snap-Greens’. Enhanced dissolved oxygen plus LED lighting produced plants with the greatest yield, especially in the crown pea, with most axillary branches producing flower and pods in addition to the primary inflorescence.
Results from the crown pea also suggest that horizontal vine growth could be utilized in indoor production for enhanced yield of pea shoots, flowers, and pods.
Plant architectures modeled with a program developed with SAS JMP will also be presented.
