CO2 partial pressures and 1-methylcyclopropene affect stem end flesh browning development in Gala apples during controlled atmosphere storage

Abstract
The effects of different partial pressures of CO2 (pCO2) with or without 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on stem end flesh browning (SEFB) development of Gala apples during controlled atmosphere storage has been investigated.
Fruits were untreated or treated with 1-MCP after overnight cooling and stored at 0.5°C in 2 kPa O2 with 0.5, 1, or 2 kPa CO2 for 19 weeks at 0.5°C followed by 7 d at 20°C. Fruits softened during storage but effects of the treatments on the fruit quality were negligible.
SEFB incidence increased with longer storage time and was the highest at 2 kPa CO2 with no 1-MCP. 0.5 kPa CO2 with no 1-MCP had the lowest SEFB incidence compared with other treatments.
More research is needed to understand the effects of fruit maturity in combination with different pCO2 during CA storage on development of the disorder.
