Abstract
Ethylene expedites ripening and senescence in many horticultural commodities.
Hence, ethylene management is often essential for shelf life prolongation for ethylene-sensitive fresh produce.
This study compares different ethylene scavengers commonly used in packaging.
The absorption capability of various ethylene scavengers, such as potassium permanganate, zeolite, halloysite, titanium dioxide modified with palladium, were analysed and compared.
All tests were conducted at a fixed temperature (20°C), relative humidity (~50%) and ethylene concentration (10 ppm) in a fixed volume chamber.
Ethylene analysis was performed using a ETD-300, (Sensor Sense, The Netherlands). Results indicated that potassium permanganate based materials were quick to adsorb more than 99% of ethylene compared to other products.
Ethylene concentration dropped to <0.1 ppm in 2 h.
A comparison of different products was performed and percentage ethylene removal calculated.
These results could be used to enable the selection of ethylene removal scavenging materials more suited to different types of fruit (rate, sensitivity to ethylene, product mass), packaging (size, permeability) and storage conditions.
