Transposable elements and the carrot genome

Abstract
Repetitive DNA constitutes nearly half of the 473 Mb carrot genome and most of it can be attributed to transposable elements (TEs), mostly ‘fossilized’, but some also still active.
TEs have been shown to be responsible for several carrot traits, including those important from the agronomic or consumer point of view.
Two most abundant groups of TEs, i.e., miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs) and long-terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs), are of particular interest with respect to host/TE interactions providing genetic novelty possibly useful in crop improvement.
Here, we present the current knowledge on the effects of TEs on carrot genes and discuss possibilities opened by high-throughput technologies to investigate and utilize intimate TE/genome relationships for genetic improvement of carrot cultivars.
