Valorization of carrot genetic resources through participatory breeding for organic farming

Abstract
The challenge for any genebank is to valorize the maintained genetic resources as much as possible and to address the needs of various stakeholders.
Most of the valorization concerns scientists and plant breeders of seed companies.
Direct valorization of carrot populations can be done by organic vegetable growers, interested in diversified and plastic material.
A partnership was developed since 2006 between the French carrot genetic resources centre Carrot and Other Vegetable Apiaceae (Institut Agro, Angers, France) and an association of organic vegetables producers (Bio Loire Ocean) looking for cultivars more adapted to their needs and facing the compulsory use of organic seeds.
A large diversity of carrot accessions has been evaluated in organic conditions, leading to the direct valorization of one accession.
Then, specific selection traits, including sensory quality, were decided by the growers and a participatory breeding program was set-up based on maternal selection.
After 10 years of participatory breeding and evaluation in various environments, a new population cultivar of Nantes type suitable for organic production conditions was obtained.
Perspectives include disease resistance, seed quality and the development of cultivars in other carrot types.
