Comparative study of indigenous almond varieties in Armenia

Abstract
Armenia is one of the countries where farming originated, and remains a globally significant center of agrobiodiversity due to the country’s natural diversity of climatic zones, ecosystems, topography, and vertical zonality.
The country’s agrobiodiversity includes a number of local varieties of fruits and nuts which are critical to community health; these local food crops provide a basis for food security, are of a high nutritional value, increase food supplies and agricultural production sustainability.
Presently nut crops total approximately 2,887 ha with about 10-12% of that land dedicated to local varieties of almond.
The production of almonds in the country is based on local traditional varieties.
Historically, almonds were propagated by seed without grafting, and so there is a wide variety of biological and agronomical features among indigenous varieties.
Some of the varieties are distinguished by their drought resistance and frost resistance (up to -30°C and more). The present research was carried out to identify important agronomic and phenological characteristics of indigenous almond varieties so that they can be grafted on clonal rootstock for future almond orchard establishment.
