Abstract
Almond (Prunus dulcis) is currently grown on over 1 million acres in California.
The growth in almond acreage has resulted in increased irrigation demand.
The recurring droughts in California coupled with the need to comply with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) are expected to reduce the amount of water available for almond production.
Efficient water saving practices are needed to maintain almond productivity to meet the growing demand for almonds from the industry nationally and globally.
In the last few decades, deficit irrigation strategies have been implemented in almond orchards to cope with these challenges.
This brief review focuses on the impact of different deficit irrigation practices on almond production, quality, and crop water productivity in California.
These practices include sustained deficit irrigation (SDI), and a range of severities in regulated deficit irrigation (RDI). The potential and prospective challenges of each practice are determined and will be discussed as a tool for growers to select the appropriate deficit practice for maximizing crop water productivity and for best irrigation water management practices.
