Californian almond cultivar and rootstock behavior against Plum pox virus

Abstract
Plum pox virus (PPV) causes the disease Sharka in Prunus orchards (apricot, plum, prune and peach) and can be a serious limiting factor in tree production.
PPV was detected in the USA in 1999 and was declared eradicated by the USDA in October 2019. Despite the official declaration of eradication, Sharka is still of great concern, mainly because of the huge quarantine efforts and millions of dollars spent on it in California.
Studies about Sharka on Californian almond cultivars and rootstocks are scarce, and the behavior of different cultivars and rootstocks in reaction to Sharka was never recorded.
As part of a project supported by the Almond Board of California, we are studying a group of almonds and rootstocks commonly grown in California to determine their behavior against PPV. The results obtained so far in the almond cultivars suggest that most are fully resistant to PPV while six almond varieties have tested PPV positive by RT-PCR in at least one replicate.
Further phenotyping cycles are necessary to confirm this behavior.
Additional tests on almond rootstocks showed 15 out of the 17 rootstocks included in our assays display significant Sharka symptoms and tested ELISA or RT-PCR positive.
Only two rootstocks have shown resistance: the interspecific hybrid ‘GF677’ and ‘DryStock One’. Both scion and rootstock selection could influence the severity of a potential Sharka disease outbreak in California.
