Abstract
Irrigation and pruning culture practices were applied to ‘Shiraz’ vineyard sited in La Roda (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain) over two seasons (2020-2021). Irrigation (I) less than 1,500 m3 ha‑1 was applied in two situations: (I1) from pea-sized grape to postharvest (providing at least 20% of the total amount of irrigation water in postharvest) and (I2) start of irrigation from pea-sized grape to harvest (usual irrigation practice in this area). Pruning (P) was applied on the two irrigation treatments: (P1) at the end of January, which is pruning on a conventional date and (P2) pruning carried out at the beginning of budding.
In total, 4 repetitions were designed with 4 elementary plots (I1P1; I1P2; I2P1; I2P2). The results showed a lower yield in spring pruning treatments (P2) compared to winter pruning (P1) treatments in the two years of study, with no clear trend in yield between the two irrigation treatments studied, since in this case, the variable year influenced more than irrigation.
Regarding the chemical composition of the berry, the increase in malic acid is highlighted in the treatments pruned in spring (P2), compared to those pruned in winter (P1). The irrigation treatment had a clear effect on colour intensity, being greater in the treatments that continued to be irrigated postharvest (I1), regardless of the pruning that was carried out on them.
In volatile composition, the results showed a higher season effect than treatment on the total concentration.
Thus, a decrease of the concentration was observed in 2021 respect to 2020 in the two fractions, free and glicosidically, where the differences between treatments found in 2020 tend to be damped in the 2021 season.
A tendency to increase the concentration in I1P2 was observed in the two seasons studied.
