Abstract
Despite living on a planet where water covers more than 70% of its surface, reserving this natural resource is still an important constraint as only around 2.5% of all the water is freshwater.
Fresh water scarcity accompanied by an increase of population and climate change (extreme temperatures, droughts, etc.) make it urgent to tackle the critical problem of water stress.
Agriculture and more specifically the traditional irrigation methods that depend on human labour and decisions to irrigate the crops are well known fields that waste water through inefficient water usage like over-irrigation.
Thus, consolidating irrigation and technology via innovative solutions to create smart closed loop irrigation systems that are able to monitor and control water usage becomes inevitable.
These systems are expected to save water, enhance crop yield, and help farmers in times when they cannot access their field e.g., during wars.
This paper presents AliaTerra, a digital innovative solution developed at Demand Side Instruments that monitors the field, controls and automates the irrigation system.
The aim of AliaTerra is to manage and preserve natural resources in the agricultural world by relying on up-to-date information and communication technologies.
This paper also discusses the bonding between AliaTerra and machine learning to predict rain and thus optimize irrigation based on weather conditions.
