Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the water requirements and create a model of optimum irrigation for a mature commercial ‘Thong Dee’ pummelo (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck) orchard.
Tree sap flow data were collected from a pummelo orchard in the Kaset Sombun district, Chaiyaphum province of northeastern Thailand.
Five trees, five years of age, were selected.
Xylem sap flux density data were recorded through the transient thermal dissipation method (TTD10; 10 min of heating and 20 min of cooling in a half-hour period) with a Granier’s type probe at the end of the 2020 rainy season.
The volumetric soil water content was well-watered with 26.5-30.5%. Our data collection found that tree transpiration (ET) fluctuated according to temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). The maximum ET was roughly 70 L day‑1 in a condition of unlimited air evaporation.
T and ET demonstrated a positive correlation, whereas the relationship between RH and ET was negative, and the relationship between VPD and ET presented a logarithmic correlation.
An evaluation of the proposed VPD and ET model demonstrated a highly positive relationship between the estimated ET and measured ET; which proved to successfully estimate the water requirements of the ‘Thong Dee’ pummelo.
