Cultivation strategies for high-value halophytes in controlled-environment agriculture for nutritional benefits

Abstract
Water resource management strategies in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) encourage the exploitation of saline water (saline irrigation water due to rising sea levels or re-usage of wastewater) for hydroponic cultivation.
Halophytes, or salt-tolerant plants, have evolved various mechanisms to thrive in higher salinity conditions.
These plants have been identified as a potential solution to various global challenges, including food security, freshwater scarcity, and the need for healthier human nutrition.
They are rich in nutrients, including antioxidants, fatty acids, and macro- and microelements, making them beneficial for human consumption as potential leafy greens.
However, specific features of halophytes require diverse cultivation conditions compared to the major CEA crops, such as lettuce and other leafy vegetables.
Therefore, in this study, we explored the aspects of cultivation strategies for halophytes Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, Portulaca oleracea, and Plantago coronopus in CEA with a focus on the target management of hydroponic nutrient solution parameters and adaptive lighting accounting for plant physiological responses toward high-value production.
