Influence of shading and of a vegetal-protein hydrolysate on parsley grown under greenhouse

Abstract
The necessity to enhance parsley (Petroselinum crispum Mill.) yield and, concurrently, moderate extreme radiation and hot temperature during the spring-summer season drives vegetable greenhouse growers toward the use of supplementary agronomic practices such as shading and plant biostimulants.
The designed experiment was conducted to test the interaction between shading and the application of a vegetal-protein hydrolysate (PH) ‘Tyson’ on ‘Gigante d’Italia’ parsley grown under protected cultivation.
Plants were grown with 50% black shading or without shading.
Half of the plants grown under shaded and unshaded conditions were sprayed with ‘Tyson’ PH, whereas the remaining plants were sprayed with water.
Plants were harvested four times and yields were recorded immediately.
Biomass from the second and the third harvest was used for the analysis of quality features.
Shading condition decreased plant dry matter percentage and SSC, contrariwise, SSC was augmented by ‘Tyson’ PH supply.
Leaf area was significantly increased by shading and PH application, showing a synergistic action.
Interestingly, polyphenols and ascorbic acid were increased by PH applications, however, the highest polyphenols concentration was found in biostimulated unshaded plants.
Our study pointed out that the combined use of 50% black shade net and ‘Tyson’ PH could be a useful approach for greenhouse parsley cultivation during the spring-summer period.
