Biochemical properties of hydroponically and soil-cultivated Eryngium caucasicum and Eryngium campestre in Armenia

Abstract
Eryngium L. is a plant used as a functional food and in medicine.
In this article, two different species of Eryngium (E. caucasicum Trautv. and E. campestre L.) have been investigated.
They contain flavonoids, phenols, and other antioxidant compounds and have anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.
The general aim of this research was to examine the growth and yield of Eryngium in outdoor hydroponic systems and soil conditions for the first time in Armenia and measure the content of bioactive compounds at these cultivation conditions.
Experiments were carried out in the ebb & flow outdoor hydroponic system and the soil culture at the experimental field of the Institute of Hydroponics Problems (IHP) in Ararat Valley.
Hydroponic equipment with a 1-m2 surface had an automatic irrigation system.
A mixture of volcanic slag and gravel was used in the hydroponic system as a substrate, each with particles 3 to 15 mm in diameter.
The soil plants were the control group and standard agricultural practices were followed for these plants.
Plants in hydroponics were nourished 1-2 times a day with the Davtyan’s nutrient solution and plants in soil – once in two or three days (depending on the season) with artesian water.
The seeds were sown in mid-February.
Seedlings were transferred to hydroponic substrate and soil from late April to early May.
In hydroponics, the growth of E. campestre plants stopped in mid-July and recovered from September, while in soil the plants have continued to grow normally.
Soil plants of this species were 2 times superior to hydroponic ones in the diameter of the leaf rosette and 1.7 times in the number of leaves.
The experiments showed that the content of extractives, flavonoids, and total phenols in wild E. campestre plants was 38.1, 0.05, and 0.04%, respectively. E. caucasicum plants flowered both in hydroponics and soil.
After flowering, new leaves stopped forming.
In hydroponics, new leaves appear on flowering plants starting from October.
Hydroponic E. caucasicum plants contained 35.8% extractives and 0.8% flavonoids, 0.4% total phenols, and 4.3% tannins.
