Abstract
The plum is the most important species in Romania, where the climatic conditions are favorable for the spread of plum cultivars belonging to the European group.
The plum assortment is constantly changing according to the requirements of consumers and growers.
This paper presents the results regarding the behavior of new promising plum cultivars (‘Andreea’, ‘Romanța’, ‘Milenium’, ‘Jojo’, ‘Haganta’, ‘Toptaste’, ‘Topfirst’, ‘Čačanska Lepotica’) in comparison with traditional cultivars widely grown in Romania (‘Stanley’, ‘Anna Späth’, ‘Early Rivers’, ‘Tuleu gras’ and ‘Centenar’). The field trial was conducted in 2015 at the Genetics and Breeding laboratory of the Research Institute for Fruit Growing in Pitești, Romania.
The trees, grafted on the rootstock ‘Mirobalan C5’, were planted at a distance of 4×3 m, and the crown was trained as a flat open center.
The following observations and determinations were made in the period 2020-2022: ripening time, yielding capacity, fruit weight, flesh firmness, soluble solids content and behavior to Plum pox virus (PPV). Following the observations and determinations made in side of new cultivars group, ‘Topfirst’ and ‘Cacanska Lepotica’ were found to be early ripening (3rd decade of July) in the same time with ‘Centenar’, but not earlier than the old ‘Early Rivers’. ‘Haganta’ is late ripening (two weeks earlier than ‘Anna Späth’). ‘Romanța’, ‘Jojo’ and ‘Haganta’ are very productive (more than 10 kg tree‑1 in the sixth year after planting). ‘Romanța’, ‘Milenium’ and ‘Haganta’ had very large fruits (more than 60 g on average). The fruits of the new cultivars were sweeter and firmer than those of the old cultivars. ‘Jojo’, ‘Andreea’ and ‘Haganta’ are resistant to PPV while all old cultivars are sensitive.
Some of the new cultivars could fill the old plum assortment and also replace some of them.
