Abstract
One of the reasons for FAO’s presence at this 9th African Horticultural Symposium is not so much to present you with a scientific or technical communication on any specific subject, but to become better associated with the efforts made by all countries represented here in their attempts to develop successful horticulture.

FAO appreciates the initiative taken by the International Society for Horticultural Science in organizing the African Horticultural Symposia and would like to thank the Government of the Seychelles for hosting the present 9th session.

In support of the interest which FAO has for this meeting, the Director-General has made a direct financial contribution.

We are sure that all of us share the opinion that this meeting will encourage concerted and mutual cooperation among developing countries and will lead to improved exchange of available information.
