Abstract
Ethiopia has a 10-year development plan for socio-economic activities to begin in 1984. For horticultural crops there will be 24 700 ha under state farms yielding c. 487 000 t of produce by the end of the plan.
About 15 000 ha will be under permanent tree crops, the remaining area to be used for vegetable production.
Before the plan there were less than 2 000 ha of fruit in the state farms.
The export potential and the increasing demand of the local market were considered.
Most horticultural produce, especially perennial fruits, comes on the market when competition from the Mediterranean region is less severe.
Ethiopia’s proximity to important consuming centres in Eastern Europe is of great importance in competing with countries in the southern hemisphere which enter the market at about the same time.
