Abstract
In trials in 1979 and 1980 of high-yielding onion cultivars, cv.
Hojem was a consistently high yielder (43–68 t ha-1), but has lower storage potential than other cvs such as Bon Accord (25–32 t ha-1) which have been stored successfully for up to six months at 2–5°C, and for up to three months under ambient conditions.
Other cultivars with good yields and storage ability were Dessex, Henry’s Special, Red Star, Tropicana and Red Creole.
The effects of planting date on yield were important; late May planting of some cultivars gave about half the expected yield of crops sown two months earlier, as the growing period was shorter.
