Abstract
Solarization by transparent polyethylene mulch and fumigation with methyl bromide (MB) were employed to overcome a severe reduction in fertility of drained histosols (peat soils) in the Hula swamp area.
Snap beans planted after 9 weeks of solarization yielded 1.24, 1.10, 0.98 and 0.64 t/ha in the solarized, solarized + methyl bromide (MB), MB and control treatments, respectively.
Vegetative growth responded similarly.
The beneficial effect of solarization was still evident with winter wheat, the second crop after disinfestation.
In the rhizosphere of plants growing in solarized soil, populations of fluorescent pseudomonads increased and those of fungi decreased.
The effectiveness of both disinfestation treatments may indicate that plant growth retardation on these soils is connected with biotic agents.
