Abstract
The supply of chemicals, even volatile, but adsorbing and degrading onto and in soil generally involves side-effects of phytotoxic and/or residual nature.
From the phytotoxic viewpoint, damage may occur as a result of partial desorption from soil as occasionally stated in the case of methyl isothiocyanate applications.
Fumigants of the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon type present, apart from phytotoxicity, residues (bromide) and, in particular cases, taste alterations (1,3-dichloropropene). The active compounds, as well as potential diffusion enhancing compounds may give rise to soil and/or soil water contamination.
To avoid the latter risks, soil conditions and leaching possibilities have to be taken into account.
With regard to effectivity, as well as to environmental and residual aspects, previous basic research and conclusions from some review papers are listed.
