Abstract
During transport and sale plants can be exposed to damaging ethylene concentrations and low light levels for a long period.
Two transport simulation experiments were designed to show the reaction of Capsicum annuum ‘Janne’ to ethylene during transport.
Transport simulation consisted of 72 hours of darkness at 19°C, ethylene exposure times of 6–72 hours and ethylene concentrations of 0.05–5.0 μl/l.
After transport simulation the plants were placed in an interior environment.
The response of Capsicum to ethylene in the form of leaf and fruit drop was dependent on developmental stage, exposure time and ethylene concentration.
The leaves were the most ethylene sensitive parts of the plant followed by the green and blue fruits, whereas ethylene did not affect the development of the red fruits.
Plants at a rather early developmental stage were most sensitive to ethylene.
Capsicum is very sensitive to ethylene, e.g. there was a large decrease in market value after ethylene exposures of 1.0 μl/l for 12 hours and 0.05 μl/l for 72 hours.
A critical ethylene exposure is listed dependent on developmental stage, exposure time and ethylene concentration.
