Abstract
During the period 1983–7 a European Community research project (COST90bis) was organised to study aspects of colour measurement in foods.
Part of the conclusion of that study was that both a standard method and a reference colour tile were required for colour measurement of tomato paste.
This recommendation was taken up by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) programme of the Commission of the European Communities and the result has been the production of a suitable tile within specified limits.

This recommendation was taken up by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) programme of the Commission of the European Communities and the result has been the production of a suitable tile within specified limits.
Tiles will be provided with individual calibration traceable to national standards.
Individual tiles will lie with the target range of Hunter Lab units:
L = 24.5 ± 2.0
a = 32.0 ± 2.0
b = 14.0 ± 0.5
a/b = 2.3 ± 0.1
These are regarded as typical values for a good quality tomato paste diluted to 12% TSS. The tile will be available from 1990.
