Abstract
Specific growing techniques are developed locally in order to enable out of the soil intensive culture possible, when conditions in the soil are limiting, and climate is favourable.
The "enarenado" technique started more than 30 years ago and became the basis fo the largest protected crop area in Spain, with around 13,000 ha of vegetables and ornamentals, growing on unuseful soils, irrigated with saline water.
The "enarenado" technique started more than 30 years ago and became the basis fo the largest protected crop area in Spain, with around 13,000 ha of vegetables and ornamentals, growing on unuseful soils, irrigated with saline water.
The technique is described and discussed, as well as the evolution and progress towards other soilless methods of culture adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
