Abstract
Applying fertilizers with the irrigation water-fertigation-is a regular and widely accepted fertilizing practice under greenhouse production.
In this way, the concentrations of individual nutrients in the form of soluble fertilizers can be adapted to meet crop’s needs according to their stage of development and the climatic conditions.
In this work critical technical aspects, the present knowledge, future prospects and further research needed to develop balanced fertigation recipes for crops under greenhouses, are briefly discussed.
It is suggested that fertigation, properly used with the trickle irrigation system could help to increase crop yield and improve quality on a degradation-free and sustainable basis.
Increase in water and fertilizer use efficiencies, with the fertigation technology, are particularly stressed.
The main limiting parameters for future wide application of this approach, further research work needed, and potential solutions are also presented.
