Abstract
Two experiments were carried out in a glasshouse in which lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L.) were grown in recirculating nutrient solution with a view to evaluate their performance in yield and tissue nitrate content with time.
The objectives of the study were to investigate whether climatic conditions (light and temperature) could affect yield and tissue nitrate content, high levels being undesirable for human health.
Tissue nitrate content and yield were affected by temperature (solution and air temperature) as well as by global radiation suggesting that under high light intensity and temperature, heavier plants and with less nitrate content, could be obtained.
