Abstract
Sago palm fronds was assess for its potential as a pulp and papermaking material using the soda-AQ pulping process.
Three active alkali (14, 16 & 18%) and two AQ (O & 0.1%) levels were used in the study.
Alkali and AQ addition were found to have a highly significant effect on all the pulp and paper strength properties.
Fourteen percent alkali charge was insufficient in the delignification process, whereas 18% pulp produce paper of low strength.
Sixteen alkali charge with 0.1% AQ gave the best pulp and paper properties; pulp yield of 45% low shive content (0.07%), Kappa number of around 18, tensile index of 82 Nm/g and a burst index of 7 Kpa m2/g (beating time of 30 minutes).
