Abstract
In view of the damage caused by fusarium root rot on asparagus and the inefficiency of chemical control, the best stategy for the control of this disease is to preserve plant health during early growth.
To achieve this aim, in France, a Root Necrotic Potential ( PNR) test is proposed to nursery growers for the choice of their future growing fields.
A biotest, in a glasshouse, is carried out on soil samples to evaluate soil infectivity.
The root rot indices of five-weeks-old test plants are converted into economic risks using a prognostic scale.
This soil diagnosis approach can also be used to choose root rot-free planting fields.
With 600 soil samples tested each year, this technique is used to monitor 60 % of INRA nursery areas (160 Ha). In 88 % of the fields tested with good PNR results, all asparagus crowns could be sold as quality produce.
The PNR is an essential method of diagnosis to prevent asparagus decline and to develop all the integrated control technics.
