A PROPOSED ASPARAGUS DESCRIPTOR LIST FOR GENEBANK MANAGEMENT

For numerous horticultural and agricultural crop species, the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) (formerly the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources -IBPGR) promotes crop-specific descriptor lists in an effort to unify the documentation of germplasm collections.
Although the list of descriptor publications appears exhaustive, it does not include asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.).

In the absence of an official IPGRI descriptor list for asparagus, we have adopted the recommended methods and procedures as applied to other crop species.
In this way, it is hoped that once the IPGRI adopts asparagus into its official nomenclature existing information can be easily transcribed.
In the interim, we hope that use of the following descriptors and format provides a reliable and efficient means for information storage, retrieval and communication.
