SELECTION OF ECONOMIC POLLINIZERS FOR FUYU SWEET PERSIMMON (DIOSPYROS KAKI)

Abstract
Along with the recommended cultivars of a Korean Johongsi (JHS) and Japanese Nishimurawase (NW) and Senjimaru (SM), six local strains (LS) of persimmon, designated as A through F, were evaluated in 1992 for their potential value as a pollinizer for Fuyu persimmon (Diospyros kaki). As to the blooming period, all the pollinizers except NW and JHS were considered acceptable for Fuyu.
SM, LS-A, LS-C, LS-E and LS-F had more stamens and the pollens.
Stamens of LS-A, LS-B and NW were heavier but contained fewer pollens.
Evaluation of fruit characteristics of the pollinizers revealed that a sweet LS-A and an astringent LS-B were considered the most economic.
The commercial value of LS-C was considered high because of its complete non-astringent and early maturity.
Seasonal growth pattern and the characteristics of Fuyu fruits were not affected by the pollen sources.
