Abstract
The objective of this study was to characterize the genetic diversity of the germplasm bank accessions of ‘goiabeira serrana’ (Feijoa sellowiana) by using morphological and allozyme markers.
A great diversity among accessions was exhibited by the Feijoa sellowiana germplasm for all morphological traits analyzed: anthracnose resistance, fruit weight, fruit form, pericarp appearance, ratio outer/inner pericarp, and pericarp strength.
In all cases, the diversity was higher among Brazilian accessions, basically undomesticated types.
Small or no variation for those traits was detected among Uruguay types, probably, because the selection pressure during the domestication.
Usually, the Brazilian types show both higher seed weight and anthracnose susceptibility and lower pilosity in the leaf abaxial face than Uruguay types.
Allozyme markers were assayed on leaf tissue extract from plants of 122 accessions by using starch gel electrophoresis with Morpholine-citrate as electrophoretic buffer.
High resolution was observed in the enzyme systems IDH, PGI, PGM, and 6PGDH. While no bands were detected with PRX, G6PDH, and MADH, the systems ACP and ALP did not stained enough for accurate evaluations.
At least on locus exhibited polymorphism in the systems IDH, PGM and 6PGDH. The most frequent allele showed frequency higher than 0,8 in all cases.
In general, no significant association was detected between morphological traits and between them and the allozymic loci, with the exemptions of the coefficient of correlation of -0.60 (P<0.0001) observed between fruit weight and the ratio outer/inner pericarp.
Additional traits and allozymic systems will be assayed to well characterize the feijoa germplasm.
