Abstract
A review of potassium (K) nutrition in pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is given and research perspectives in this area are discussed.
Very limited information is available about K nutrition in pistachio.
Recent studies indicate that K uptake and distribution in pistachio trees are driven by the development of the fruit, with the crop serving as a sink for K. K uptake occurs mainly during the nut fill period, with little K uptake during the spring vegetative flush and postharvest periods.
K fertilization is found to be effective in increasing leaf K status, nut yield and quality in pistachio.
However, no guidelines for K fertilization exist and no generally accepted yield-based K diagnostic criteria have been developed.
Further studies on K nutrition should be conducted in association with problems encountered in pistachio production, such as soil moisture regimes and nutrient interactions, in order to optimize the K fertilizer program.
