COMPARATIVE NUCLEOTIDE SEQUENCES OF THE COAT PROTEIN-ENCODING REGION OF THE GENOMES OF CHERRY LEAFROLL VIRUS STRAINS INFECTING WALNUT

Walnut blackline disease is caused by a strain of cherry leafroll virus, CLRV-W. In California, a number of English walnut cultivars grown on Northern California black and Paradox hybrid are susceptible to the disease caused by CLRV-W8. In order to help clarify the relationships among CLRV-W isolates around the world, the sequences of the coat protein encoding regions in the genomes of CLRV-WRS from Italy, CLRV-Wsp from Spain, and CLRV-WOx from England were determined and compared to the corresponding genomic region of CLRV-W8 from California.
The coat protein-encoding regions of CLRV-WOx and CLRV-W8 share more than 99% homology.
The corresponding genomic regions of CLRV-Wsp and CLRV-WRS share 96.0% and 94.7% homology with that of CLRV-W8, respectively.
The only structural variation that was detected in the genomic regions of the isolates analyzed here was at the 3′-end of coat protein gene of CLRV-WRS. This structural variation in the coat protein gene of CLRV-WRS may partly contribute to the serological distinctiveness of this strain from other CLRV-W strains.
