ERADICATION AS A CONTROL MEASURE FOR X-DISEASE IN CALIFORNIA CHERRY ORCHARDS

Abstract
When X-disease phytoplasma (X-phytoplasma) first became established in the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) orchards under study, affected trees were randomly distributed, indicating chance migration patterns of infective leafhoppers onto the site.
Secondary spread, however, was highly clustered around known diseased-tree sites, suggesting that these trees served as reservoirs for pathogen acquisition by leafhopper vectors residing onsite.
Monitoring leafhopper activity with yellow sticky traps over several cropping seasons helped to identify potentially infective leafhoppers by using extracts of vector species for dot-blot nucleic acid hybridization assays using a 32P-labeled DNA probe specific for X-phytoplasma.
Although infections were not totally eliminated, the incidence of disease spread was significantly less when an insecticide application was made prior to roguing of diseased trees.
