Abstract
Disease resistance is a major objective in apple breedíng programmes, mainly for scab (caused by Venturia inaequalis) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha). Recently, many new scab-resistant cultivars have shown susceptibility when inoculated by a new race of V. inaequalis, showing the vulnerability of monogenic resistance when confronted with pathogen dynamics.
In this framework, the main European research teams involved in apple breeding, genetics and pathology have begun to coordinate their efforts in order to develop a large research programme on durable resistance.
This project aims to characterise and analyse the genetic bases of the interaction between apple and its two main pathogens.
The objectives include: genetic dissection of scab resistance; analysis of pathogen diversity in Europe; deployment of a European network of core orchards; evaluation of the efficiency of marker assisted selection; and propositions of new breeding strategies.
