RESISTANCE TO SCAB IN APPLE PROGENIES OF RESISTANT AND SUSCEPTIBLE CULTIVARS

An important aim of the new Hungarian apple breeding programme is to produce by hybridization cultivars that have durable and high level of resistance to apple scab combined with good quality and regular yields.
Most of the parents carried scab resistance genes: V_ƒ – ‘Prima’, ‘Florina’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Priscilla’, ‘Priam’, ‘Richelieu’; V_m – ‘Rouville’; V_ƒ+polygenic – ‘Freedom’. The susceptible parents were: ‘Idared’, ‘Jonathan M41’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Fuji’, ‘Meran’ and ‘Braeburn’. In 1992, 1993 and 1994 the sensitivity of the progenies to scab was evaluated after early inoculation.
The greenhouse tests were related to data from the field.
There were differences in the capacity of the scab-resistant cultivars to transmit resistance depending on which V genes were carried.
There were substantial differences also in the capacity of the cultivars that carry the V_ƒ gene to transmit resistance.
The highest proportion of resistant offspring was observed in progenies of resistant x resistant cultivars with V_ƒ and V_ƒ+poly genes.
The inheritance of scab resistance was also influenced by the susceptible parents.
