INVESTIGATION ON DETERMINING SOME PEAR VARIETIES RESISTANT TO FIRE BLIGHT (ERWINIA AMYLOVORA (BURRILL) WINSLOW ET AL.)
This disease first entered Turkey in Central Anatolia in 1985 and spread rapidly to the other parts of the country.
Western Anatolia, where this research is done, is the most important region for fruit growing.
In this region, fire blight is a widely spread disease of pome fruits, especially of pears.
Number of pear trees and production of this region are estimated as 3 million and 69,000 tons respectively.
This study is performed on 35 local pear varieties to test their tolerance to fire blight under controlled conditions.
For this aim, pear nursery trees were inoculated with the Erwinia amylovora isolate.
The values for varietal evaluation of resistance were obtained by measurement of shoot lesions.
As a result, it was determined that most of them are susceptible to fire blight.
Some varieties such as Keklik ayagi, Ovali, Eksi Göksulu, Kara Çibik and Tas pears were identified as less susceptible.
